A breech baby is a baby that presents bum first rather than head first. This will have been diagnosed by your midwife or doctor. Although breech babies can be born vaginally, most doctors will offer a caesarean to birth the baby and so you may want to try and get your baby to turn. You may be offered a procedure called External Cephalic Version (ECV) to attempt to turn your baby into a head down position. Moxibustion can be used alongside this, but it can also be used on its own if you would like to avoid medical intervention.
Moxibustion is a gentle and non-invasive ‘Traditional Chinese Medicine’ technique that you can complete in the comfort of your own home. A herbal ‘Moxa’ stick is lit and the heat from this will be held over an acupressure point (bladder 67) at the base of your toenail on your little toe. This point is linked directly to the uterus and the heat causes stimulation, triggering hormones which allow the uterine muscles to relax slightly. It also causes your baby to become more active, meaning they are more likely to turn.
